The Powertrain Electrification in a Hypergrowth Phase

A recent study by BloombergNEF1 shows sales of electric vehicles (EVs) increasing from a record 1.1 million worldwide in 2017, to 11 million in 2025 and then surging to 30 million in 2030.The consumer demand for the electric vehicles is experiencing a massive growth.

According to a Deloitte study2, two key factors are contributing to this explosive growth.

  1. Consumers seek for greener vehicles as the awareness of carbon emission and the effect it has on the environment is steadily increasing.
  2. Government policies offering financial incentives for the purchase of an EV/HEV along with local government restrictions on air pollutants and greenhouse gas emission and the usage of gasoline/Internal combustion engines.

The growing demand for the EV has created a huge incentive for the OEMs to enter this market with huge growth potential. Many top-tier OEMs have already released EVs or have announced their intention to do so in the near future. New entrants are entering the market as well, making this a very competitive landscape.

How can the OEMs and their suppliers maintain a competitive edge in the EV market with delivery of EVs/HEVs in this challenging market?  While OEMs and Tier1s are resorting to electrification of the powertrain, the key to maintaining the competitive edge is to address 3 big challenges namely:

Mitigating consumer range anxiety by increasing the battery range and performance, so an EV could be compared in range with a traditional combustion engine vehicle.

Reducing charging time – Charging the EV battery faster with a highly efficient solution, so charging an EV will not be more a burden than filling a gas tank.

Reducing Cost, so EV will not be more expensive than traditional cars.

At Silicon Mobility, we are taking on these challenges by playing our role. Our innovative Applications drastically improve the efficiency of an electrified powertrain. Our state-of-the-art solutions can increase the battery range of an EV by up to 30%!  Think about it: an average cost of 1 kWh battery is around $150: 30% range improvement on a 100-kWh battery yields a cost saving of $4500 per car. i.e. identical vehicle range can be achieved with smaller battery with our efficient solutions.
